Turn On Your Search Engines

The way a search engine like Google (or Bing, or any other search engine) works is that they have an army of computers which are constantly viewing pages on the web, and storing information about what each of those pages is about.

Search engines can find your website in one of two ways:

  1. If someone else links to your website, then they will will follow that link and find your site
  2. You can submit your website to them directly

You should start by submitting your website to Google ( and Bing ( Once you do that, they should start to crawl your website soon and you should start to show up in search results.

Beyond the search engines finding you, there’s nothing else that you NEED to do to have the search engines display you in their search results. They will automatically determine what your website is about based on the text on your website’s pages, and automatically show your website in searches that are relevant. It usually takes search engines from 2 weeks to 8 weeks to crawl across the entire Internet and update their search data, so you likely won’t see your website start to show up on search engines for at least a couple of weeks.

The reality of it is that unless you’re a REALLY big company, you’ll likely never turn up at the very top of the search results for very general searches. e.g. you’re never going to be on the first page of a Google search result for “jewelry”. The companies that are on that page (and really, on the first 4 or 5 pages usually) have spent a LOT of money and time to get there, and also generally have a huge amount of recognition within the industry itself already, which in turn lends them a higher search result (more on that later).

You WILL however turn up in search results that are more specific – e.g. if you sell a jewelry collection called “All Things Wings” you’ll probably see the search term “all things wings jewelry” start to point to your website very soon.

Search engines closely guard the algorithms they use to determine which websites are relevant to which type of search terms – those algorithms are their trade secrets, so they’ll never directly tell you what it takes to make your website show up higher/at the top of their search results. But, there’s a lot you can do/think about to make your website show up in more search results, more often:

  1. Content – search engines like fresh content/articles. If you write blog posts/articles/pages with meaningful content that’s interesting to readers, search engines will scan your website and show your website in results more often.
  2. Links – other websites linking to your website count as “votes” towards the importance of your website. If you can get other websites (especially other websites about the same/similar topics – e.g. about jewelry design, etc.) to link to you, your website will seem more important to search engines and show up in search results more often.
  3. Keywords – use words that you think users search for in your articles/posts/pages/content. e.g. if you expect people to search for “All Things Wings Jewelry” to find you, then make sure you use those words on your website somewhere.
